El argentino Diego Schwartzman (octavo preclasificado) quedó eliminado en los octavos de final del torneo de tenis de los Juegos Olímpicos Tokio 2020, al perder este miércoles con el ruso Karen Khachanov (duodécimo) por 6-1, 2-6 y 6-1.
En la próxima rueda, Khachanov se medirá con el vencedor del partido que estaban jugando el griego Stefanos Tsitsipas (cuarto favorito) y el francés Ugo Humbert (14).
Más tarde, en tanto, debutarán en el dobles mixto Nadia Podoroska y Horacio Zeballos, los únicos argentinos que siguen en carrera en el tenis olímpico, con los australianos Ashleigh Barty y John Peers.
Con la eliminación del “Peque”, 13 del ranking mundial de la ATP, la delegación argentina pierde una de sus esperanzas más firmes de lograr una medalla en los Juegos japoneses.
Después de un primer set en el que fue completamente dominado (apenas 27 minutos de juego) y de un comienzo algo irregular en el segundo, Schwartzman recuperó la iniciativa al quebrar para el 4 a 2 y completó el 6-2 en 38 minutos.
El último parcial resultó el más parejo de los tres (55m) y el 6-1 con el que se cerró en favor de Khachanov no refleja lo sucedido en la cancha 3 del complejo de Ariake, aunque es cierto que el tenista ruso jugó mejor los puntos decisivos y su victoria fue merecida. El historial entre ambos ahora refleja dos triunfos para cada uno.
Schwartzman había debutado con una victoria sobre el peruano Juan Pablo Varillas y luego eliminó al checo Tomas Machac.
En singles masculino, antes de esta derrota de Schwartzman, Francisco Cerúndolo, Federico Coria y Facundo Bagnis habían quedado eliminados en primera ronda; en el femenino, Nadia Podoroska llegó hasta la tercera vuelta; y en dobles de varones, las dos parejas argentinas se despidieron en el debut: Horacio Zeballos-Andrés Molteni y Bagnis-Schwartzman.
