De esta manera, Taiana abandonará su banca como senador nacional para integrar el Gabinete de Alberto Fernández tras jurar en la Casa Rosada. El sociólogo de 71 años llegó al Senado en 2019 tras integrar la lista que encabezó Cristina Kirchner en 2017 como segundo candidato por la provincia de Buenos Aires. Aunque perdió contra la lista del PRO de ese entonces, ocupó su lugar luego de que asumiera como vicepresidenta.
No obstante, el flamante ministro tiene en su historial un momento determinante para su carrera que lo enfrentó con la expresidenta. A pesar de tener una larga trayectoria en el peronismo, la misma no estuvo exenta de roces con los referentes.
En 2010, cuando ocupaba el cago de Canciller, renunció a sus funciones tras entablar una fuerte discusión con Cristina. Aunque desde la cancillería aseguraron que su salida se debía a una “falta de apoyo” y “diferencias que sentía para la implementación de decisiones políticas que afectan el desarrollo de la política exterior de la Argentina”, trascendió otra versión del conflicto. Al parecer, la exmandataria se habría enojado con Jorge Taiana por haber filtrado información a Clarín, acerca del rol de Brasil en el monitoreo de la papelera Botnia en Uruguay. Vale la pena recordar que en ese entonces el oficialismo y el medio mantenían un conflicto público.
Se trató de una renuncia cuanto menos inesperada, ya que asumió en 2005, durante el primer mandato de Cristina. En ese entonces, al ser vicecanciller le tocó reemplazar a Rafael Bielsa, quien también renunció. Su cargo en el Gobierno databa desde el mandato de Néstor Kirchner, el cual conservó con la asunción de la esposa del difunto presidente.
